Clark County Commission Approves More Cops Tax

The Clark County Commission approved the more cops sales tax increase Tuesday.

With six votes in favor to one against, the commission greenlighted a five-hundredth of a cent sales tax increase, with proceeds going to Metro and local police departments in Boulder City, Henderson, Mesquite and North Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the tax is estimated to raise just more than $14.5 million each year for Metro alone, and $4.8 million dollars annually for the other police departments.

Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani was the lone commissioner to vote against the measure, which takes effect at the beginning of 2016.

It was also one of the first votes for new county commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, who was sworn in today to serve the remainder of Tom Collins' term.
