RENO, Nev. (AP) — Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed into law legislation creating millions of dollars in incentives to help combat Nevada's severe teacher shortage.
Sandoval's daughter, Maddy, watched over his shoulder as he signed the measure Monday in the library at Reno High School where she is a senior about to graduate.
Sandoval said its part of an "unprecedented investment in education" — totaling hundreds of millions of dollars overall — that state lawmakers had the courage to approve this year as part of a $1.1 billion tax increase.
The bill he signed Monday creates the Teach Nevada Scholarship program, which offers up to $3,000 per semester for students studying education or completing a licensing program at Nevada colleges.
It also creates a $5,000 yearly bonus as an incentive for new teachers working in low-rated schools.
