Most people think of Las Vegas and Reno as two cities but UNLV historian Eugene Moehring says we should really think of it as three cities. The third city is the Las Vegas Strip.
Its pattern of development was totally different from either of the old downtowns built around a railroad depot. The comparison of the three cities is laid out in Moehring's new book, "Reno, Las Vegas and the Strip: A Tale of Three Cities." In fact, the business-friendly environment and large tracts of land that allowed megaresorts to be built is unique and could not have been replicated in either Las Vegas or Reno. All of that has made the Strip the real economic winner.
Moehring argues that we need to diversify the economy but Las Vegas will continue to rely on resorts as the major driver of the economy in the foreseeable future. Moehring will be speaking about his new book at the UNLV University Forum this Wednesday.
