Wild horse advocates have dropped a lawsuit challenging roundups near the Nevada-California border now that Nevada has cut ties with the contractor hired to do the roundup.
The Nevada Fish and Wildlife Service used J&S Associates of Mississippi to round up wild mustangs last fall in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. But Bonnie Kohleriter and Laura Leigh of the Nevada-based group Wild Horse Education filed the suit claiming that the state should have known the contractor was selling horses for slaughter. Kohleriter and Leigh originally filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in Reno and were scheduled to go before the judge yesterday. They still have concerns over what the state will do with the 500 horses it plans to gather in the future.
