The ACLU of Nevada filed a lawsuit Tuesday that challenges a proposed ballot initiative that seeks to make “sanctuary cities” unconstitutional.
Senate Republican Leader Michael Roberson is one of the primary sponsors of the “Prevent Sanctuary Cities Initiative” which seeks to make it illegal for local law enforcement and government officials to not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
The Nevada Independent reports the lawsuit argues that the language of the proposed amendment is pejorative and doesn’t have a legal definition and is therefore misleading.
The ballot initiative would first need to collect more than 112,000 signatures to qualify and would need to be approved twice by voters in 2018 and in 2020 to change the state’s Constitution.
