Nevada Governor Cutting Ribbon On 'Electric Highway' Charge Station

BEATTY, Nev. (AP) — Gov. Brian Sandoval will be cutting the ribbon on the first in a series of electric car charging stations between Las Vegas and Reno.

A ceremony is scheduled Tuesday at the Eddie World gas station in Beatty. Some of the ports can recharge a car in four hours, while others can charge a car to 80 percent in 30 minutes.

Sandoval announced the so-called "Electric Highway" last summer. The project aims to help drivers complete the 450-mile journey in their short-range electric cars, and boost rural economies by bringing tourists who need to charge their cars to small towns.

Officials are still negotiating partnerships to get charging stations in Fallon, Tonopah and Hawthorne. Money for the project is coming from NV Energy and Nevada's renewable energy tax abatements.
