St. George Apartment Fire Forces DSU Students To Evacuate

Fire officials say a blaze at a southern Utah apartment complex forced some college students to escape by jumping from the second floor.

St. George Fire Battalion Chief Robert Hooper says more than 30 students were evacuated from a three-story complex near Dixie State University on Monday. He says the fire caused roughly $150,000 in damage.

Hooper says thick smoke in the stairwell caused some students to jump 8 to 10 feet from their balconies.

Hooper says the fire started in an unused basement. The cause is still being investigated.

Some students were treated for smoke inhalation and a maintenance worker was treated for a burn on his hand.

The American Red Cross is assisting 10 students who were displaced from their apartments.
