Nevada Senate Okays Two Sandoval Education Initiatives

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Senators have approved two bills to implement Gov. Brian Sandoval's education initiatives.

The full Senate voted Thursday to approve SB405, which expands the Zoom School program focused on English language learners.

Senators also passed SB391, which requires students know how to read by third grade to advance to fourth grade. The retention provision will be delayed four years to allow students time to adjust.

Both measures now head to the Assembly.

Sandoval is proposing tens of millions of dollars to Zoom School and Read by 3 programs, but lawmakers still must give final approval to the budget items.
