🐴 A teenage girl competing in a barrel racing event was arrested over the weekend after she stabbed three competition horses with a pocketknife at a barn in Las Vegas, according to police and event organizers.

Police responded to a report of an injured horse early Saturday morning at South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa, a hotel about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from the Strip with a massive equestrian center. Officers learned that three horses had been injured, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Detectives with the animal cruelty division identified a teenage girl who had access to the barn as a possible suspect. The 17-year-old, whom police did not identify, was booked on 12 counts related to animal maiming and torture and three counts of malicious destruction of private property, according to police and South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa.

💰 American billionaire Barry Diller proposed an $18 billion takeover bid for MGM Resorts on Sunday, The New York Times reports. Diller is the founder and chairman of People Inc., a digital empire that operates 40 brands, including People and Life magazines. The company already owns a little more than 26% of MGM Resorts’ shares and holds two board seats, one of which Diller occupies.

Diller announced in late April that the company was narrowing its focus on MGM Resorts, describing its assets as “undervalued” in a letter to People shareholders. He plans to pay $48.30 per share, in cash, for the remainder of MGM’s stock. Reports say the offer is not final. The move comes after Golden Nugget owner Tilman Fertitta announced plans to acquire Caesars Entertainment in a $17.6 billion deal.

Robynn Bell is Child Haven’s deputy director. She said the goal of the new clinic is to ensure a continuum of care. Hear the full story by KNPR's Anne Davis here.

🐾 People love their pets like family — regardless of how much money they have to spend on them. So, what happens when the dog or cat needs lifesaving care? It can lead to tough decisions, particularly in the current economy. There is some help out there.

Nonprofit organizations in Nevada work to provide lower cost pet care to owners. They often focus on preventative services to intervene and minimize complications early on. The Animal Foundation, Southern Nevada’s main public pet shelter offers vaccinations and microchipping. The Nevada Humane Society in Reno and Las Vegas expand on those services, providing low-cost spaying and neutering. And the SPCAs in both Northern and Southern Nevada also have programs to help cover veterinary expenses for pet owners who can’t afford them.

Still, leaders of these organizations say, there isn’t enough financial assistance to meet the need, especially when it comes to critical care. Hear the full story by KNPR's Heidi Kyser & Rafaela Gandolfo here.

🏒 Rod Brind'Amour knows the exact moment he realized the Carolina Hurricanes could be Stanley Cup contenders. “Eight years ago,” he said. That was when Brind'Amour took over as coach, beginning a journey of making the playoffs every year and falling short of the final each time until now.

The Vegas Golden Knights were born nine years ago, but from the time they pillaged the rest of the NHL in the expansion draft through this spring, they have set championship expectations. They made the final in their inaugural season and won it all in 2023. Their third visit to the Cup Final is perhaps their most surprising.

This Vegas-Carolina final is almost a decade in the making for a pair of teams in non-traditional markets that have become powerhouses. The collision course brought them to this moment, a best-of-seven series that begins with Game 1 on Tuesday night. Hear the full story here.
