Nevada OKs $400K To Settle Patient Dumping Suit From Calif.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada officials have approved paying $400,000 to San Francisco to settle allegations that psychiatric patients were wrongly bused to California.

The Nevada Board of Examiners approved the payment Tuesday. It still needs to be approved by a court and the board of supervisors in San Francisco.

San Francisco sued Nevada in 2013 amid reports that patients discharged from Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las Vegas were bused to California and directed to seek services there. The lawsuit sought money for their care.

Nevada didn't admit wrongdoing in the settlement, and board member Gov. Brian Sandoval said San Francisco had a similar program to give patients bus tickets after their discharge.

The settlement specifies both parties must notify each other when patients are planning to travel from one jurisdiction to the other.
