Clark County held a community meeting Monday, June 30, to provide updates on the effort to clear unhoused people from a local wash, which is around 12% complete.
The town hall, officiated Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom and members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, briefed community members on their progress with homeless abatement measures.
That included May’s $15 million Flamingo wash clearing and revamping, which is expected to be done by May 2026. Of the more than 60 unhoused individuals evicted from the wash so far, Segerblom said, only two accepted referrals to housing. But, he added, the county plans to do more.
“They have a right to exist. They have a right to be treated fairly. In a country this rich, we have an obligation to offer them services and make sure and keep offering services," Segerblom said.
In 2024, more than 7,900 Southern Nevadans were experiencing homelessness during the official count.
Cities around the state, including Las Vegas, Reno, and Sparks, have anti-camping ordinances on the books. Experts say this drives unhoused people into tunnels and washes.
