It’s a time of year when people start getting sick. There’s the flu, there remain lingering variants of COVID-19, and there’s norovirus.

Some people know it as a “stomach flu,” though it’s not a flu at all. However it can result in vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. It’s highly contagious, and about 70,000 cases are reported in this country each year, with 600 to 800 deaths.

The Southern Nevada Health District reported finding more norovirus in community wastewater last month.

There’s no known cure for norovirus, but a potential vaccine could be on the way. The drug company, Javara, in conjunction with Nevada Health Centers, is undertaking a norovirus vaccine trial in Carson City.
