"You might love it after five minutes, but you love it even more after 15."

That's what UNLV art professor Sean Slattery said about Haide Calle's work.

Calle does complex mixed-media art, often using fabric. At first glance, it can seem soft and whimsical, but the more time you spend with it, the more layers fall away to reveal a deeper meaning.

In October, the culture issue of our magazine, Desert Companion, will feature ones to watch. These are profiles of remarkable up-and-coming local artists and performers.

Calle recently completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts requirements at UNLV. She's actively involved with the nonprofit Fifth Sun Project, and next week, on Wednesday, September 18, her first curated exhibition, I Need Space to Roam, opens at Left of Center Art Gallery.
