A surf park in Las Vegas? It's one idea for historic Commercial Center

As downtown and central Las Vegas become more popular, Clark County is reviving its own redevelopment program. One focus area is a mid-century outdoor mall on Sahara Avenue.

At a meeting on Wednesday, county commissioners voted to spend $1.2 million to build an office for security at Commercial Center, on Sahara just west of Maryland Parkway.

The move comes after business operators have complained about things such as vandalism and people openly having sex in the parking lot. Commissioners also said tenants have reported break-ins — even in spaces owned by the county.

Longer term, the county's goal is to redevelop dozens of acres on this large plot. The county already owns some of the buildings and the 17-acre parking lot.

So what might redevelopment look like?
