Here's why some lawmakers want to shrink Nevada's higher ed board

NSHE

For years, the board that governs Nevada's universities has made headlines — but not in a good way. They’ve been accused of harassment, favoritism and just making bad decisions, at times based on political and even religious beliefs.

And it stunned people when a candidate in 2018 without a college degree won a seat on the board, as he ran unopposed. Last year, voters narrowly voted down a ballot question to hold the Regents more accountable to state lawmakers.

But there’s a new attempt this legislative session to limit the number of members on the board and reduce regent terms.

Maureen Shafer is the CEO of Nevada Health & Bioscience Corporation; she’s also executive director of the Council for a Better Nevada and a leader behind the push to reduce the size of the Board of Regents. Also joining State of Nevada host Joe Schoenmann is former Nevada Republican State Senator Warren Hardy and UNLV political science professor David Damore, who is also a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
