Lander County is 120 miles west of Reno and about a 6-hour drive north of Las Vegas. It’s 120 miles from top to bottom and varies from 20 to 60 miles wide.
It's big enough that its 6,000 residents could each have about a square mile to themselves.
Its four schools have just over 1,000 students, and they rely in part on mining tax proceeds to fund operations.
But, those receipts aren't as strong as once predicted.
