A changing of the guard is about to occur in Southern Nevada - in the world of poetry.
Bruce Isaacson is completing his two-year term as Clark County’s poet laureate. On June 1, Vogue Robinson will become the new poet laureate.
“It’s a great place from which you can raise interest in the arts and help build a community around the arts. That’s the best part about it is the community that grows up around it, for me,” Isaacson told KNPR's State of Nevada.
Robinson said she is excited to be an advocate for poetry for all of Clark County.
“My goal is to do it unconventional spaces so that people understand that it can be incorporated into almost anything,” she said. And by "unconventional" Robinson said that means anything from classrooms to retirement homes.
She is also working on a 24-hour poetry event that starts with breakfast and poetry for kids in the morning to lunch and workshops in the afternoon and late night poetry slams.
Robinson read her poem, "Denture Love," from her book, "Vogue 3:16."
Isaacson brought many nationally known poets to Las Vegas and continues that trend with a visit from David Lehman:
