Gardner is the incumbent for District 9, which encompasses the far southwest part of the valley. He told KNPR’s State of Nevada that he originally ran for the office because he wanted to improve education for his four children.
He said one of the biggest concerns his constituents talk to him about is crime. He said for an area that has traditionally been very safe there has been an increase in crime, particularly break ins. He said state lawmakers can address that problem by making sure there is enough money for law enforcement agencies to hire more police officers and that there are not mandates for law enforcement that don’t have funding attached to it.
Gardner is responsible for the bill to reorganize the Clark County School District. He said he started on the effort because he was “to dumb to realize it couldn’t be done.” Gardner said he put in a lot of time and effort with both Democrats and Republicans to get everyone onboard.
He said he was happy with the empowerment schools plan and supports pushing as much power and money from a centralized administration to the individual schools.
