Investigating Teachers Who Cheat

Investigators for the Nevada Department of Education concluded that an unusual increase in test scores at Matt Kelly Elementary was the result of cheating by educators at the school. Clark County School District officials suspended Matt Kelly Principal Patricia Harris, Assistant Principal Steve Niemeier and Associate Superintendent Andre Denson.

But now the union representing those employees is firing back. The conclusion of cheating isn't supported by the evidence, says Stephen Augspurger, executive director of the Clark County Association of School Administrators and Professional-Technical Employees.

So how do investigators determine when cheating has occurred? How conclusive is the statistical evidence? And can numbers be misleading?
