It's with knuckles bruised from exuberant fist-bumping and elbow tendons strained by high-fiving that we note Desert Companion's showing in this weekend's prestigious Maggie Awards, handed out in Los Angeles by the Western Publishing Association. The cover of our April 2013 spring fashion issue, above, shared top honors in the category of cover design for consumer magazines with a circulation of less than 75,000.

In the Desert Companion secret test kitchen — okay, the home of Staff Writer Heidi Kyser — Kyser and Art Director Chris Smith created treats from kid-friendly recipes that will soon appear in a special edition of the magazine: Desert Companion Family. Here, Chris lines up a tasty shot.
