Suspect caught within hours of deadly shooting at Mirage hotel, Las Vegas police say

UPDATE: The suspect has been identified in the shooting inside a hotel room at the Mirage on Thursday night.   

Police identified 54-year-old Billy Hemsley, who detectives found and arrested near Nellis Boulevard and Twain Avenue. He’s being held at the Clark County Detention Center on one count of open murder and two counts of attempted murder. 

Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument with family members and that there was no threat to the public. The victim was his cousin, according to police.

ORIGINAL REPORT: A suspect is in custody on Friday morning following an overnight shooting on the Las Vegas Strip that killed a man and injured two women.

Police responded to the shooting around 10 p.m. Thursday to a room at the Mirage hotel. It was believed the suspect and victims knew each other.

Police Capt. Dori Koren told media on scene that officers arrived about a minute after the initial call and with security officers provided medical attention to the women, who were hospitalized with critical injuries.

The suspect was caught within hours.

At 3 a.m. on Aug. 5, Koren tweeted, "Suspect identified, located, [and] arrested! And all within six hours of the incident. Great work by our LVMPD personnel & community partners. There’a no such thing as getting away with murder in Vegas!"
