Nevada Highway Patrol Appoints 1st Woman Leader

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — For the first time in its history, the Nevada Highway Patrol has appointed a woman to lead the agency as colonel.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety said in a statement Anne Carpenter assumed command Monday. She will oversee about 600 employees, including 491 sworn officers.

Carpenter replaces former Colonel Daniel Solow, who announced his retirement earlier this month. Carpenter began her career as a Department of Public Safety officer in 1995 and gradually rose through the ranks, serving as an officer, sergeant, major and chief of the Parole and Probation Division.
