Superintendent Asks Lawmakers To Keep Supplemental Spending For Low-Income Students

Nevada lawmakers are meeting this week for a special legislative session to address more than a billion dollars in budget shortfalls due to the coronavirus pandemic.

One item on the chopping block is a supplementary funding program established by Senate Bill 178.

It provides $1,200 per student for low-income youth and English language learners.

Washoe County School District Superintendent Kristen McNeill told State Senators that while the program wasn’t a big part of the district budget, it paid for intervention strategies and afterschool programs.

“We did not have many positions within SB 178, however those intervention strategies are extremely important to making sure students can reach their academic progress,” she said.

The special session is expected to last at least through the end of this week.
