Nevada Jobless A Record 22%; Performers Hope Gigs Can Return

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Economic signs are dire in Nevada, where the state jobless rate hit a record 22% on Friday - well above the national unemployment rate of 14.7%.

The U.S. mark is as high as the Great Depression.

Nevada's historic skid to a stop came after Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered casinos and many businesses closed in mid-March to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Some businesses are due to reopen Saturday, but not casinos or music venues.

One Las Vegas Strip performer says everybody wonders when gigs will return. She calls it a huge unknown.

Sink your teeth into our annual collection of dining — and drinking — stories, including a tally of Sin City's Tiki bars, why good bread is having a moment, and how one award-winning chef is serving up Caribbean history lessons through steak. Plus, discover how Las Vegas is a sports town, in more ways than one. Bon appétit!
