Nevada Prison Inmate Serving Life For Murder Dies At Age 85

Officials say an 85-year-old Nevada prison inmate serving a life sentence for murder has died behind bars, and authorities say they're still seeking to notify next-of-kin.

The state Department of Corrections said Thursday that Allen Battenfield died Jan. 31 at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. A cause and manner of death were not disclosed.

The Reno Gazette-Journal in April 1980 identified Battenfield as a ranch hand sought as the suspect in the deaths of two men whose bodies were found near Tonopah.

Both had been shot in the head. Neither victim was identified in the newspaper report.
