The Las Vegas City Council is scheduled to discuss toughening the controversial camping and sleeping ban aimed at the homeless, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
A proposed ordinance requires the city’s chief Department of Operations and Maintenance to post signs indicating when public sidewalks are going to be cleaned.
During those hours it would be a misdemeanor crime to camp, sleep, lie, sit or otherwise obstruct city efforts to sanitize the sidewalks, according to language in the bill.
Unlike the camping ban, which goes into effect February 1, enforcement isn’t contingent on whether or not beds are available at homeless shelters.
Violators can be punished by up to six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
The council is expected to take up the stricter ordinance during Wednesday's meeting.
