MINDEN, Nev. (AP) — The Douglas County Commission has denied an appeal by a group of ranchers who want to open a slaughterhouse on the edge of Gardnerville.
Commissioners cited concerns about the location in a flood plain in upholding an earlier vote to deny a permit for the slaughterhouse in the unincorporated town of Centerville.
The Record-Courier reports about 400 people turned out for Wednesday night’s meeting in Minden. The meeting hall’s capacity is 290 so loud speakers were set up outside in Minden Park to accommodate the overflow crowd.
Several ranchers spoke in favor of the proposed slaughterhouse on a 60-acre site that served as a dairy for six decades. Slaughterhouse proponent Karin Sinclair wanted to repurpose the buildings already on the site.
Commissioner Wes Rice urged Sinclair to work with the Douglas County Farm Bureau to find a new location.
