Reno Takes Steps Toward Allowing, Regulating E-Scooters

The Reno City Council is considering letting controversial electric scooters back to the city, the Reno Gazette-Journal reports.

On Thursday, the council told staff to draw up a new ordinance that would allow scooter-share businesses to return.

However, the new ordinance won't do much except align the city with a new state law that allows local leaders to regulate, and impose fees, on such scooter rental companies.

One company, Lime, debuted in late 2018 and was sent packing in March of this year, thanks in part to the uproarsurrounding its surprise roll-out of around 100 e-scooters.

City lobbyist Dylan Shaver said staffers were not currently in talks with any prospective scooter-share operators. He said officials would have to establish a formal franchise agreement with any companies that want to set up shop here.
