Pilot Dies, Passenger Hurt In Helicopter Crash At Red Rock Canyon

The pilot of a helicopter that crash near Red Rock Canyon Wednesday night has died, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The passenger of the helicopter remains in critical condition at University Medical Center.

The Federal Aviation Administration say the four-seat Robinson R44 crashed just before 4 p.m. Wednesday not far from the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area visitor center.

According to media reports, the pilot was a 53-year-old man with a Connecticut ID.

Police Officer Larry Hadfield says State Route 159 was closed in both directions for an investigation by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.

Red Rock Canyon is about 25 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.
