Authorities Investigating Prison Death As A Homicide

Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at a private prison in Pahrump as a homicide.

The facility is used by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but a spokeswoman said the man was not in ICE custody.

The man was found dead early Friday during a security inspection in a secured cell at the Nevada Southern Detention Center.

A spokeswoman for the company that operates the prison says the male inmate was found unconscious in his secured cell.

She declined to identify the inmate or release further details about his death or the lockdown.

But the Las Vegas Review-Journal says the 28-year-old inmate was serving time for burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and attempted coercion and his sentence was scheduled to end in August 2020.
