LAS VEGAS (AP) — The superintendent of Las Vegas-area schools is backing off his plan to eliminate campus dean positions to save money.
The Las Vegas Sun reports that Clark County schools chief Jesus Jara told trustees late Thursday he's exploring other ways to plug a projected $17 million deficit in the district's $2.4 billion budget.
Jara has drawn intense criticism since announcing he was cutting jobs of all 170 administrators supervising middle and high school teachers and safety.
The district is among the largest in the nation, with about 320,000 students at 360 schools. Classes resume next month.
A judge on Monday blocked the job cuts at least until an Aug. 14 hearing on an employees' union lawsuit alleging the decision to cut dean positions came during a meeting that violated open-meetings law.
