Lawmakers Fail To Pass Birth Control Bill

Despite the historic first female majority Legislature in Nevada, lawmakers failed to pass a bill that would have allowed pharmacists to dispense contraceptive methods directly to patients.

Senate Bill 361 would have changed existing law and allowed women to receive birth control without seeing a doctor first.

The State Senate unanimously passed the measure on Sunday. It was then sent to an Assembly committee, but that committee never met on Monday before deadline so the bill never got a vote.

Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro expressed disappointment in the bill’s failing but blamed it on running out of time.

State lawmakers took more than 650 actions Monday to meet the deadline at midnight.
