LAS VEGAS (AP) — People lined up around the block at a Las Vegas church to attend the funeral for Nevada Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson.

Hundreds of friends, family members and Las Vegas-area residents paid their final respects Saturday to the 51-year-old Democratic state lawmaker from North Las Vegas who died May 4 in Carson City after falling ill.

U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford says Thompson was always present to make the Nevada community and the people in it stronger.

North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee says Thompson's legacy is the people he touched and the people he fought for.

Thompson spent almost two decades volunteering as a court-appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children in the foster care system.

He joined the Assembly in 2013 and later was chair of the education committee.
