Arizona’s Governor signed a bill into law this week that strengthens penalties for people who abuse domestic animals in the state.
Governor Doug Ducey signed HB2671 into law, which elevates the offense from a class 6 to a class 5 felony – making it harder to knock down to a misdemeanor.
HB2671 also carries a presumptive term of 18 months in prison. The Humane Society of Southern Arizona said the group considers the bill a fix to a previous problem with the law and not holding offenders accountable.
