Rockslide Forces Road Closure Inside Zion National Park

(AP) — Officials at Zion National Park say a rockslide inside the park has forced the closure of state Route 9.

The Spectrum newspaper reports that park officials announced Sunday that the road will remain closed "until further notice."

The rockslide on the switchbacks beneath the Zion-Mount Carmel tunnel was brought on by heavy rain on Saturday.

Park officials say a retaining wall failed beneath the roadway.

Park officials also announced the closure of several hiking trails and popular canyoneering routes, several of which are only accessible by crossing the tunnel.

The Canyon Overlook Trail is closed, along with the Keyhole, Pine Creek, Fat Man's Misery and Lodge Canyons trails.

Several other trails remain closed due to previous landslides, including the Kayenta Trail and the Upper Emerald Pools Trail.
