Family Said Mom Who Stabbed Child Was Depressed

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police in Las Vegas say a 21-year-old mother described by family members as being depressed since giving birth stabbed her 2-year-old son to death and wounded herself with a knife.

Lt. Ray Spencer told reporters the child was found dead on a bed Monday by patrol officers after the boy's father and the woman's cousin broke through a door to a bedroom where the woman refused to come out.

The woman was conscious when police arrived and was hospitalized in serious but stable condition at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center with what Spencer called apparently self-inflicted stab wounds.

Her name wasn't immediately made public.

Spencer said the cousin also lived in the house in a neighborhood south of McCarran International Airport.

She told police she hadn't seen the child since Sunday and was talking to the woman through the door until about 15 minutes before police arrived.
