CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada legislation introduced Monday would require background checks on gun sales and transfers between private parties.
The Assembly and Senate will hold a joint meeting Tuesday to discuss the proposal.
The bill aims to close a loophole that allows criminals to purchase guns and avoid background checks by going through unlicensed gun seller.
Voters approved a gun background check initiative in 2016, but former Gov. Brian Sandoval and Attorney General Adam Laxalt, both Republicans, said it could not be enforced and was flawed.
Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak said last month that he's working with the lawmakers to enforce the initiative.
Moms Demand Action, a group that advocates for gun reform legislation, has scheduled an "Advocacy Day" event in Carson City on Tuesday morning.
Daniel Reid, a regional director with the National Rifle Association, says he believes the bill will move rapidly through the legislative process.
