Audit Shows Town Clerk In Utah Embezzled Much More Than Originally Thought

The clerk in a small town in central Utah was found to have embezzled more than $300,000 over nine years, equating to about 13 percent of the town’s total budget.

Tracy Kay Mellor pleaded guilty to three felony counts of misusing public money in Fayette, Utah, was sentenced to 45 days in jail and ordered to repay more than $150,000 in November.

But a new audit released this week shows the small town was cheated out of double that amount.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the new audit scolds past leaders for not detecting the theft, which was made largely by Mellor writing checks to herself and her husband.

The audit went so far as to say town officials should resign if they were in office prior to January 1, 2018. The town said it has hired an outside accounting firm to help get its books in order.
