Government Shutdown Forces Death Valley National Park To Close Areas

The government shutdown is causing Death Valley National Park to close more of the park for health and safety concerns associated with the pileup of human waste, trash, vandalism and park resource damage.

Park officials announced Friday the Furnace Creek and Texas Springs Campgrounds will be closed until further notice.

Access roads to Natural Bridge, Dantes View and Keane Wonder Mine will also close.

Visitor services have been limited due to the lapse in federal appropriations, even with volunteers donating time and money to keep parks open.

In a statement, park officials said the Stovepipe Wells Campground and the private campgrounds at The Oasis Furnace Creek Ranch and Panamint Springs remain open.
