The Nevada controller’s office says tax breaks used to attract Tesla, Apple and other corporate entities to the state have cost public schools more than $108 million in the past 2 years.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reviewed state financial documents dating back to July 2016. The reports reveal losses totaling $69.9 million for the Storey County School District, $16.5 million for Washoe County and $19.1 million for Clark County.
Tesla has pledged education grants to area schools in coming years, but the total anticipated amount of those grants represents just a little over half of Storey County’s two-year losses.
Governor-elect Steve Sisolak ran for office on a platform advocating for smaller class sizes and higher pay for teachers.
A spokesman told the Gazette-Journal Sisolak is "consistent in his commitment to scrutinize any incentive package to ensure that any deal benefits communities and Nevadans alike."
