The Reno City Council has unanimously rejected efforts to allow homeowners to build "granny flats" on their properties.
Proponents believe the small dwelling units built on the grounds of single-family homes could be one way to address the city’s affordable housing shortage.
But residents in some Reno neighborhoods vehemently opposed an ordinance that would allow the units, with concerns they would impact the historic character of older neighborhoods.
