A measure to ban Airbnb and vacation home rentals in South Lake Tahoe is winning by a margin of 25 votes with more provisional and mail-in ballots left to be counted.
Measure T seeks to phase out vacation home rentals in South Lake Tahoe’s residentially zoned areas, and proponents of the measure are winning by less than half a percentage point.
The county estimates there are still 500 and 700 votes left to count.
The topic of vacation home rentals has been one of fierce debate among residents, with one side lamenting their impact on neighborhoods while the other touts their benefits for tourism.
If Measure T passes, it will phase out nearly 80 percent of the city’s vacation home rentals in the next three years. El Dorado County’s Elections department said the official tally stands at 3,115 “yes” votes, and 3,090 for “no.”
