City Of Las Vegas Kills 'Anderson Dairy' Bill

The Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to kill a proposed ordinance that would have made it unlawful for people to sit, lie down or camp on a sidewalk within 1,000 feet of a food processing facility.

The bill prompted criticism from those who feared it targeted homeless people.

Emily Paulsen, the executive director of the Nevada Homeless Alliance, told the Nevada Current the bill essentially criminalized being homeless.

The bill would have affected an area of downtown known as the homeless corridor – a section of the city that has services from nonprofits like Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, which is located about 500 yards away from Anderson Dairy. City officials referenced health concerns in their original reasoning behind the bill.

City records obtained showed officials with the Southern Nevada Health District did not feel it was a hazard.
