RENO, Nev. (AP) — A federal judge has upped a jury award to nearly $1.4 million for a Reno police sergeant and his lawyer who won a lawsuit accusing the city of retaliating against him in a medical leave case.
U.S. District Judge Robert Jones said Tuesday Sgt. Michael Browett is entitled to $1.1 million and his lawyer, ex-City Attorney Jack Campbell, more than $250,000 in legal fees and expenses.
Browett says the department denied his promotion in a flap over what kind of leave he could take after his wife suffered complications during birth.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the original jury award in January totaled about $1 million.
Browett says he was passed over for promotion five times despite scoring higher on tests than any other candidate.
The city argues Browett wasn't promoted because of anger issues and plans to appeal.
