ACLU Calls Student's Suspension Unconstitutional

The ACLU of Nevada says a Reno student’s suspension after contacting Rep. Mark Amodei’s (R) - NV office last week was unconstitutional.

17-year-old junior Noah Christiansen called the Congressman’s office while participating in last Wednesday’s school walk-out demonstrations to protest gun violence.

Amodei’s office called Christiansen’s school, complaining that he used “offensive, disrespectful and vulgar” language.

McQueen High School subsequently suspended Christiansen for two days.  Christiansen has also been stripped of his elected position as class secretary-treasurer.

The Nevada Independent reports Congressman Amodei has refused to apologize or retract his office’s complaint.

The ACLU wrote letters to the school and the Representative saying actions taken against the student restrict his right to free speech.
