Examination Finds Trauma In Dead Rabbits In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Preliminary examinations of three dead rabbits found outside a Nevada mental health facility indicate the animals had cracked ribs from blunt force trauma.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports about 50 of the rabbits were found dead last month near the grounds of the State of Nevada's West Charleston campus in Las Vegas.

Veterinarian Nicole Smee says it's not clear if the evaluated rabbits died from the trauma. Tests are still pending to determine if the animals were poisoned.

Smee says the rabbits tested negative for infections.

The rescue group Bunnies Matter in Vegas Too has been working with other organizations to retrieve the remaining domesticated rabbits from the campus.

Volunteers have collected more than 150 rabbits and have shipped about 115 to shelters across the country.
