RENO, Nev. (AP) — A winter storm packing winds in excess of 100 mph dropped about a half-foot of snow on parts of the Sierra and triggered power outages at more than 1,000 homes in the Reno area.
A couple inches of snow slowed the morning commute in the Reno-Sparks area where several slide-offs were reported early Wednesday and chain controls remained in effect over most mountain passes.
The National Weather Service reported a 114 mph gust of wind late Tuesday on Slide Mountain near the Mt. Rose Ski Resort southwest of Reno.
Wind gusts topped 100 at Squaw Summit and Alpine Meadows and Washoe Valley registered a gust of 86 mph between Reno and Carson City.
NV Energy reported about 800 customers still without power mid-morning Wednesday after more than 1,500 had been in the dark earlier, mostly in western Reno.
