Las Vegas City Council Places Moratorium On New Pet Store Business Licenses

Just two weeks after the Las Vegas City Council voted to reverse a ban on the commercial sale of dogs and cats in pet shops, they now decided to place a moratorium on accepting business license applications from such businesses.

The ordinance would have gone into place in January, and it would have effectively banned businesses from selling dogs, cats or pot-bellied pigs unless they were obtained from a shelter or nonprofit organization. It would have affected two local businesses.

But the council decided to reverse that ban, and now are working on a new ordinance that will address animal welfare in an effort to curb sales from so-called puppy mills. The council unanimously approved the three-month moratorium on accepting business license applications for pet shops that sell dogs or cats.
