A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report came out Thursday that follows a finding that suicide rates among teens increased between 2010 and 2015.
Utah requested a more in-depth federal investigation after the rate of suicides among youth ages 10-17 more than doubled from 2011-2015.
In 2015, Utah experienced 44 youth suicides, marking an all-time high for the state.
The study sought to get more information about LGBT teens, who have been determined as a high-risk group because of a lack of acceptance within the Mormon church, the state’s dominant religion.
They were able to determine the sexual orientation of fewer than one-third of the victims, but among those, researchers concluded six of them were LGBT.
