Washoe County School District Budget Gap Close To Being Closed

A school district budget gap is closer to being settled in Washoe County.

An error concerning how students enrolled in online charter schools are counted led to a $6.6 million budget shortfall in the Washoe County School District's 2017-2018 budget.

The error is to blame for the district’s lower-than-expected per-pupil funding.

Governor Brian Sandoval gave the district an allocation of $5 million in June to help the district close the gap. To square the remaining shortfall, the Department of Education has asked for an additional $1.6 million from the state's contingency fund.

That request was approved this week by the Nevada Board of Examiners. But the final decision is up to the Interim Finance Committee.
